DIFFERENT MJENGO JOBS WITH NO EXPERIENCE

Kenya as a developing world provides thousands if not millions of job opportunities in the Construction sector. Many amenities are coming up and the main job provider is Real Estate.

But, you have to wake up early and prepare for it. Reach the construction site on time to be assigned work or else you will be sent back home if you are late. If you arrived early but didn’t get selected you may rush to the next site to be selected. Unfortunately, many of the construction sites are always packed with these young and elderly job seekers. It does not require any experience to be selected as a casual worker. And some of the job seekers are graduates in different fields.

Surprisingly people who work at Mjei short form for mjengo get paid more than junior office workers if not the same. Their payments range from 500 – 1500 per day and are paid on weekly basis. If they work from Monday to Sunday the lowest gets paid 3500 Kenya Shillings. This means they get roughly 14,000-15000 Kenya Shillings by the end month. It surpasses living below the dollar rate by far. And you don’t need experience at all.

Mjengo workers are categorized into several groups.

1.  Foreman: He is an official employed by the construction company. He overlooks the daily construction activities. He selects the workers every morning and assigns them duties to be completed for the day. The foreman also dictates the required material needed for construction early, to avoid taking unnecessary breaks during work hours just waiting for materials.

2. Fundis: These are the trained/experienced personnel that mainly comprise Carpenters, Masons, and Welders who are assigned different duties by the foreman according to their professions and experience.

v   The carpenters are assigned carpentry duties that are related to the tasks to be done on that day. They always carry hack saw, and ropes, and try square and measuring tape with them. Mostly these items act as licenses to getting assigned carpentry work. You may be turned down if you do not have these items during selection. Or else you are given the duty of a casual worker.

v    Masons are given the masonry duties of the day. They deal with construction stones and sand and cement. Their tools consist of trowel, square, ropes, and in some cases the chisel. These people are always nowhere to be seen in the baby stages of the building. They are mostly needed after the foundation level is completed

v   Welders are the people who deal with the metals works related to construction. They shape and cut the metals according to required shapes and sizes. They fix and position the metals in the required area mostly the floor and columns.

3.  Casual workers: These require no experience at all. They are assigned duties of offloading construction materials that have arrived at the site, some are assigned as assistants to the fundis carrying items from one point to another within the site, and watering the slabs is mostly assigned to ladies. In general, they are assigned several duties as many duties as need be during the day.

4.   Koroga team: The team comprises people who are deployed on the day of mixing concrete for the floor or columns. They come as a package together with the construction mixer. Not all days are mixing days, so they are hired when the mixer is booked for work on a construction site. The team is trained or experienced in mixing concrete. Their tools comprise buckets that are used to feed the mixer with water, ballast, cement, and sand.

5.   Painters: If you know how to paint, there you go. This can be done by anyone, especially the first coat.

  • There are several job opportunities from what I have mentioned above. It may also include buying the simplest of the construction mixers and giving them out for hire at a percentage and you buy more modern mixers as you gain more experience in the field.
  • Other jobs are sub-contractors such as Electrical Engineers and Plumbers that come with their assistants.
Those who are for casual worker jobs can give it a shot as you gain more experience for better-paying opportunities. If you get friendly with the foremen it can be a great chance for a side hustle. You can do other things like going to college and when you are free you go to mjengo.

What other opportunity does this sector create? Feel free to leave your comment below. If you go out and get the job, come back with feedback on the same. Welcome to LIVE YOUR LIFE!
